Our Tandem Wheel Philosophy:

Tandem Wheels are a key component of the tandem bicycle. It is not advisable to try to save on weight on a tandem by using very light wheels. All the rider loads, and road impacts are reacted through the wheels. If a tandem wheel fails during a ride or high-speed descent it could be a catastrophic event resulting in serious injuries.

A high performance single bike wheel set typically has a spoke count less than 24 spokes per wheel. A low spoke count tandem wheel (less than 40 spokes per wheel) is subjected to very high stresses if one of the spokes break. A 24 spoked wheel's spokes for example is carrying about 75% more load per spoke than a 40 spoked wheel. If a spoke breaks, the 24 spoked wheel's spoke are then carrying about an additional 34% more load per spoke. Now consider that the tandem wheel is subjected to about twice the loads of a single bike. The likelihood of wheel failure happening is quite high.

CAS only recommends using wheels for your tandem which are tandem rated. Obtaining tandem rated wheel components is some times difficult, but we will try to accommodate all requests.

The following are wheels and components we recommend.
